Why the Arts are Important

As I briefly discussed in my previous blog,  I have experienced music therapy firsthand. After going through group counseling with other children, I know how important art is. Art can span a variety of interests, but every individual has the ability to create something unique through art.

There are many definitions of what art is. However, simply put, I define art as creative, human expression. Art does not have to be a painting or a sculpture. There are various forms of art. Art can be writing, photography, filmmaking, and even interior design. Some might consider many of these things hobbies, but they actually go far beyond. Art helps us to learn, communicate, cope and dream. Through art, we learn creative thinking, social skills, and how to invent. We discover a deeper understanding of who we are as well as who others are. Art gives us somewhat of an outlet to express our emotions by bringing physical, mental and spiritual healing. Finally, art believes in dreams. We take risks, go with the flow, and we make something out of nothing through the arts.

There cannot be a finished product if you give up on your art. Sometimes, you might mess up or want to change something about your art, but that makes the process so unique. Everyone has a different journey, but art teaches us to never give up. Just create.
